Amazing story and very well written. I like how the juxtaposed contrasts throughout the book- DR vs USA, DR culture vs romanticism and scifi, spanish vs english, slang vs eloquence. Extremely engaging and interesting inspection of an immigrant lifestyle I knew little about, and a culture and a history I knew little about.
The character studies in this book were amazing. I found the weaving of the past and the present effective. I was grateful for my 13 hours of college Spanish, though, because Diaz intersperses Spanish sentences in with English sentences (and they are never footnoted so that non-Spanish speakers fully understand what has been said). Much of the Spanish are extremely vulgar language...and this book is not one for those who do not want to read vulgarity and adult content.

This was an interesting book with a unique style. I still haven't decided whether the fantasy/science fiction references worked. The characters were quite engaging.

I liked a lot of the story, but the book was sometimes frustrating because there were terms and phrases in Spanish that I didn't understand. I also liked learning about some of the (very violent) history of the Dominican Republic. I had no idea.
