Oh my, what a delightful, insanely detailed, carnivalish nightmare of a novel. Bulgakov just sort of sucks up everything he can from Biblical lore, Russian paganism, Satanism, Gogol-esque humor and basically crafts this crazed, freewheeling portrait of life in early Stalinist Moscow while at the same time creating an almost unbelievably detailed re-working of Biblical Jerusalem in the days around Jesus' Crucifixion (seriously, only Umberto Ecco is this good at at drowning you in the details of b

So this is my favorite book and I've read it twice but now that I'm listening to it, I find I've forgotten so much of it. What a pleasure to re-encounter it. Maybe a sloppy memory is a good thing in this case.
