Les Miserables handily proves something that gets all too easily glossed over in a lot of books from the 19th century: Life completely sucked for the average person. Beneath all of the aristocratic intrigue and constant wars, you had an entire strata of society which was being zealously persecuted, jailed, thrown into debt, and essentially ruined for life with little to no recourse that didn't involve becoming an actual criminal. If I had known it was over 1600 pages, I probably wouldn't have started it but I am glad I did. It is a book you could read several times and not get all out of it. It sometimes seemed that Hugo wanted to discuss every topic he knew within the one book - convents, Paris sewer system, Battle of Waterloo, Paris streets, etc. The story of Cosette, ValJean, and Javert comprise a small amount of the story.
