Les Miserables handily proves something that gets all too easily glossed over in a lot of books from the 19th century: Life completely sucked for the average person. Beneath all of the aristocratic intrigue and constant wars, you had an entire strata of society which was being zealously persecuted, jailed, thrown into debt, and essentially ruined for life with little to no recourse that didn't involve becoming an actual criminal. A classic story of redemption. What I didn't expect was how descriptive Hugo would be, of people's characters and their surroundings. It was this that really kept me reading.

Wow, after eight long months of reading I am finally done with this book. What a beautiful story this was. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I began to read this book other than I knew by holding it in my hand it was large. I also knew that it was a broadway musical. I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book. There were sections, like endless pages about the battle of Waterloo or the Paris sewer system that made me wish I had of read the abridged version. I understand now
