I read this in French in college and wanted to revisit in English. I didn’t have a strong memory of it other than laughing a lot at its absurdities. It is still funny in English all these years later and it deserves its longstanding reputation as a terrific satire. Voltaire showed how ridiculous was the stance of declaring that even hideous misfortunes are somehow “for the best.” He also beautifully showed that this stance offers a nice cover for what is true indifference to the suffering of oth
