This is an amazing book about a gruesome historical event, the Cambodian genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge in the 70's. I'm still wondering how a story about this topic can be so enjoyable, considering that I am not a sociopath and don't get joy on other people's problems. I guess the author's choice to tell the story in the present, with the voice of the little girl she was during the regime might be part of the reason.
