My reading from Croatia was a very good book. Novakovich uses the life of the main character, Ivan Dolinar, as a symbol for the effects of war upon mankind. I wish I had had more time to think about the symbolism as I read, but rushed through the book too quickly. A lot of insight into the war in the Balkans and the culture of these people. Ironic and humorous.

Ivan is born on April Fool's Day - a symbol of his life to come in Tito's Yugoslavia, the war and the aftermath of communism. His curious detachment from his life lends a wonderfully funny voice to the story and absurdity of its moments. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
