I've enjoyed epic tales of a place, such as Sarum: The Novel of England and The Thrall's Tale. The basic story line of The Pillars of the Earth, if it were completely extricated and rewritten by somebody else, is probably not a bad story (although you wouldn't know it from the miniseries version, which I also abandoned), but Follett is a terrible writer!!

There were several parts in which I couldn't decide whether this book is very good or very bad. In some parts the story was told with haste, without much emotion, but in others it was just beautiful. Some of the evil plots were too forced - just when everything seems to be good you could count on William/Waleran coming up with some plot, then this plot was undone, everything was ok, then they came with another plot.
