.I must admit I gave up after 50 pages , the translation was Bizarre and disturbing

A poetic web about culture, religion and politics and their collective clash with human desire, this work is extraordinary. I laughed, cried (well, more like sobbed) and most importantly, thought. Learned something. A few things. And like any great story, wanted to read it, hear it in my own head, again...from anywhere within. Even knowing the ending. From the first page I trusted this author. Thank you to my friend, Latha, for the gift. I will pay it forward!

I'm broken into a million pieces. I've completely torn apart. Something in this book has hooked deep into my soul and I can no longer say that I'm the same person I was before this reading. The poignant story of a family and its ghosts describe a magical world where twins believe they are one, and their unconditional love for their mother and for each other can't stop the Terror, waiting for them. Second read review:
The prose is Moving.
Masterful.
Until what? How could it be otherwise?
A bit much.
It would be unfair to say Pretentious. It was an Honest Attempt.
Estha and Rahel are nothing if not Sincere and Roy should be read likewise.

I appreciated this a lot more 11 years later - appreciated everything more, the plot, the characters, the context, just how young and lacking control over their lives each character was as their downfall began. But I'm not kidding that the editorial inserts got

Mostly, I didn't enjoy reading this book. Something about the cuteness and self-consciousness of the writing didn't agree with me. But yes, I agree, we should seize the small joys in life, (and there were a few to be had by reading this book). Also, being transported to Kerala, India, and taught its history was worthwhile. ...more
