To save time for books I'm excited to read, I'm trying to stick to a 50-page test where I stop and ask myself if I actively want to continue reading a book before committing more time to it. Set in the Indian Himalaya, with Nepali and Indian characters; a cooks son sent to America to make his fortune; an orphaned granddaughter growing up in the care of her retired judge grandfather... Nepalis in India not being recognised as Indian resulting in civil unrest.
Really this had all the makings of a great story, and it won the Man-Booker. Hmm, Man-Booker - that means in my experience about a 40% success rate in whether it turns out to be good.

I found The Inheritance of Loss such a frustrating novel, in that it had all the elements in it for a really good book and it just didn't come together. It almost reads like a sketch for a longer novel where all the characters are more fleshed out, and maybe if it'd been longer it wouldn't have suffered from its constant jumping between characters in chapters so short that they can't go anywhere.
