A solid book, though a bit pedestrian at times. I started in once and didn't get into it, but the second time worked. It offers very little perspective on the big picture in China, but does give a very detailed look at the life of one man. It was interesting to read shortly after country driving by hessler. ...more

Screw everyone in this book, O-lan is a super hero. Ugh! I still liked it though ;)

Reads like an ethnography of rural china circa 1900. Found the cultural information more compelling than the story, but still a decent story.
