not nearly as good as I expected it to be. To be honest, I was bored. Every time I thought that I might stumble on an interesting passage it turned out to be anti-climax. And the "hero" of the story, I even forgot his name by now, was a truly uninteresting one. ...more

I love reading about this time period in China. The contrast between the two women in this book is really interesting, especially when foot-binding is factored in. Its hard to believe that giving yourself a disability was ever considered a sign of social status.
