This book scared me and gave me nightmares. Also, it confused me because part of it sounded like bad erotica and parts of it sounded like good dark writing. It was all pretty predictable but in that awful-car-wreck sort of way, you can't look away even though it disgusts you. I'm glad he didn't spell out the last scene. It's enough to imagine it.

I've never read Mishima before, but he's definitely got a skill for psychological characterization, especially when it comes to developing his characters hang-ups and disappointments. A lot of authors seem to rely in uber-dense prose, or on fragmentary narrative techniques to get inside people's heads, Mishima has a lighter touch, but one that's no less effective. I read this long before I knew anything about Mishima himself. It wasn't a great translation - at least I assume that is the reason for some of the rather clumsy passages and expressions in what is otherwise a very beautifully written book.
The story moved me and scared me as a teenager and it remains very powerful. Mishima was obviously a talented but tortured writer and this book must occasionally be as shocking to his fellow Japanese as it is to foreign readers ...more

This was beautifully written—Mishima’s style is so precise and poetic. The story dives into a lot of thought-provoking themes like growing up, the clash between old and new values, masculinity, and some pretty dark, unsettling ideas. It's strange, intense, and definitely sticks with you.
