The girl with the dragon tattoo manages to be an okay thriller in spite of itself. The set up takes forever, the list of characters and all of their sick, crazy interrelations approaches Tolstoy length, and either Larsson's prose is clunky and ridden with the sort of cliches most people know to avoid by the time they are fifteen, or maybe his translator just can't pull the weight. This one was hard to get into and I'll admit that I skimmed the first 80 or so pages so I honestly don't understand all the fine detail about Mikael Blomkvist's jail sentence. Once I start a book though I am stubborn about not finishing it so I persisted and once Blomkvist went to the island to uncover the murder mystery of Harriet Vanger I started to really get into the book. Amusing read. Gives some insights about Sweden, of which I know little.

The "dragon tattoo" girl is quite endearing. Supposedly based on the author's idea of a grown-up Pippi Longstocking.

I couldn't put this book down. It was a novel about a finance journalist who gets sued and convicted of libel for writing an expose in his magazine about a Finance-Bad-Guy. In the midst of this, he gets an offer to research the 40 year old mystery of the disappearance of a wealthy old man's niece. His assistant is sassy Lisbeth Salander, who has many crafty ways of unlocking the hidden truths surrounding her dissappearance.
