I enjoyed this book, the turmoil and issues around the protagonist, etc. - good story overall and well written. A few things fell flat now and then: the end felt too pat, the transformation into a man felt a little silly or insincere (i.e. the overall appearance, the immediacy w/out apparently any transitional physical/fashion issues, something seemed to be lacking in the general depiction of gender transition, etc).

This is a brilliant, nasty book. The writing style, narrative voice, and structure make it worthy to stand with the great classics of American and even European literature. But the content is just really creepy: incest, teen sexual encounters, gender-bending, violence.... Ugh.
I saved this book for summer so I could concentrate on it. I thought it would be a hard read and there were parts that I had to reread but all in all easy and enjoyable read. I had to keep telling myself it was fiction and not a real account!
Really good book. Very thought provoking and sad. And was actually a bit confused by the ending and the choice made.
