I've been wanting to re-read this series and actually re-read this book as an audio book. I didn't have any experience with an audio book and thought it would be easier to focus with this specific series since it is one of my faves. It was surprisingly an enjoyable experience because
A. Listening to an audio book actually helped play out the story in my head better
B. I could listen/read and do everything I had to do at the same time which is so so helpful and makes everyday chores actually enjo ...more

I am not really a fan of YA lit. The first time I started reading this book, I read a chapter and a half and decided that it wasn't worth my precious slacking off time during finals week. This time, I invested in an audiobook, with different results. Alright, it wasn't the best writing ever. In fact, I hate writers who overuse metaphors and use big words to reaffirm that they are good at writing intelligently. But, I must admit, Ms. Clare is a better storyteller than Ms. Meyer, and deserves cred I am not really a fan of YA lit. In fact, I hate writers who overuse metaphors and use big words to reaffirm that they are good at writing intelligently. But, I must admit, Ms. Clare is a better storyteller than Ms. Meyer, and deserves credit for creating American, young adult, female driven, Harry Potter-esque, series.

I won't bore anyone with a recap, since it follows the typical YA supernatural story pattern. Clary, our heroine, is somewhat likeable, but kinda frustrating (which I can easily blame the mandatory YA teenage angst). The famous Jace Wayland, is attractive, despite his obvious flaws, I admit. Much better than Edward Cullin. At least Jace flaws are more apparently accepted. Sadly, he is so much younger than me, I felt like a pedophile for crushing after him. I tried imagining Alex Pettyfer, like some of my friends do, but I honestly don't see Mr. Pettyfer filling Jace's shoes.

My favorite character was Luc. I whole-heartedly accept his version of the Valentine/Jocelin/Luc history. Alec and his sister (forgot her name), were unmemorable. I guess they weren't meant to mean much. Magnus Bane was an interesting character, and I can't wait to see more of him. Simon was also blah to me, though I liked how Ms. Clare kept them friends after what happened. I imagined him to be like Moose from Step Up 2 and 3, but Moose was so much cooler.

Valentine, the villain. He seemed to be almost a cross between Lord Voldemort and Darth Vadar. Omg, I didn't realize. All their names start with the letter 'V'. He made me want to smack his face with a dead fish, so Ms. Clare was pretty successful in making a formidable villain. The whole emotional manipulation, grr, I loved it and hated it.

Overall, it was unexpectedly enjoyable. The narrator did her best to make Clary sound annoying and immature (obnoxious-sounding), yet I left thinking, I want to listen more and continue the series. ...more

Just because I'm putting them in my library out of order doesn't mean I read them out of order! I like how Jace's whole life revolves around a humongous religious theme, and yet he's athiest. ...more
