Camus' The Stranger is a fine work of existential literature. The main character is confusingly simple, but simultaneously difficult and complex. As the reader struggles to understand him they will discover a fair amount about themselves. I hated this book at first, but I learned to love it for what it was: a novel meant not to entice the reader and present a lovely story but instead to bring about something in the person reading it.
