Simply beautiful.
This book, set in the Aleutian Islands during WWII, tells the story of a young Aleut girl who is uprooted from her town by American soldiers and relocated to an evacuation camp on the Alaskan mainland. This was not a part of American history that I knew and the circumstances are a heart-wrenching reminder of the unseen casualties of war. Karen Hesse tells the story in lovely free verse poems that capture not only the voice, but also the spirit of these gentle people. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in historical fiction, especially about our native people.
