I just read this book along with the great folks over at The Next Best Book Club group here on Goodreads.I really liked it. It was not something I would have read on my own, which makes it even better because it was a great surprise. Now I am on a search for my next Moore novel. The characterizations in Dirty Job were great,as well as the interplay between charcters. This book is so funny in parts I actually found myself laughing out loud on many occasions. It is full of people that you will thi ...more

So I was only recently introduced to Christopher Moore, and I cant help but wonder... What Took Me So Long?

This book was a comical masterpiece. The main character is a Beta Male, owns a second hand consignment shop, and accidently became a Death Merchant when he walked in on his wifes passing, and witnessed a man collecting her soul vessel. His days are filled with the taunting whispers of the sewer harpies, and his daughter can kill with the word KITTY. Not to mention that she is protected by 4

I loved this book. It was my first Christopher Moore novel and I am excited to read more of his hilarious and twisted humor.

In A Dirty Job, Charlie Asher is a Beta Male, who witnessed a man taking his wife's soul while she died in the hospital. This event causes Charlie to become a Death Merchant, or a retriever of souls. Charlie needs to collect souls and pass them on or else creatures of darkness, otherwise known as sewer harpies, will cover the world in darkness. Charlie's character is great,

This is the most fun I've had between the pages of a book in a long time. A darkly comic look at death and wildly imaginative urban fantasy, A Dirty Job is one of the few things I've read that is pretty much consistently funny from beginning to end. But there are also some beautiful and touching passages in here: Moore's description of - or rather, tribute to - hospice care nurses is one that springs readily to mind.

If you're looking for an engaging read that will make you laugh and toss you som

A Dirty Job vies with Lamb for my favorite Christopher Moore book. I haven't worked my way through his entire catalog (something I need to do) but I love them both.

A Dirty Job concerns itself with Charlie, the quintessential Beta Male who quite accidentally finds himself a dealer of death after his wife dies. Confusion ensues. Charlie becomes the envy of his goth-girl employee, while trying to raise his new daughter with the help of two immigrant babysitters and a couple of hellhounds thrown in

What a great book! I really enjoyed it. It was "laugh out loud" funny in quite a few parts. Christopher Moore does a great job of giving you a mental picture of what is going on in the story. The story line was creative and unique. The main character, Charlie, ends up becoming a "Death Merchant." Basically, he has to help souls get from one person to the next, but if he screws up, the "Forces of Darkness" start getting stronger and try to wreak havoc on him (and to the other people of San Franci ...more

This was my first time reading anything by Christopher Moore and I totally loved it. It's whacked out and crazy and totally hilarious. Charlie Asher learns that he is a Death Merchant and must collect the soul items of the recently departed within a certain timeframe or the dark forces of the underworld will rise again (sounds insane, I know, but it works-trust me.) The characters are quirky, the dialog is laugh out loud funny-it's great. ...more
