In the first book of this series, I was blown away by the sheer force of power this story held. I made the terrible mistake of leaving this for MONTHS on my bookshelf, gathering dust, and never revealing its amazin 15 year old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. I made the terrible mistake of leaving this for MONTHS on my bookshelf, gathering dust, and never revealing its amazing story.. until the day came that I decided I might read it; give it a go you know? I think my hesitation was due to the cover and the blurb. The cover was something to me that resembled an action book that would try too hard to please me with bows and arrows. Whereas, the blurb, don't give an insight to what exactly the book entitled- which I definitely have no issues with now at all- covers are exquisite and the blurbs are intriguing and mysterious and short and sweet.
John Flanagan has a great style of writing and the action and suspense keeps you hooked on the book until the very last pages are completed. I assume this is aimed at mainly boys, but I absolutely love action and adventure involved, and this novel includes a lot of both. What I did enjoy were Will's lessons with Halt and his development with the Ranger skills. It was quite spectacular to see the somewhat scrawny 15 year old become something so much greater. Horace was a bit annoying at the start with his anger and annoyance towards Will, totally understandable due to the circumstances he was in, but by the end, his relationship with Will had been repaired and was the very start to a long ab happy friendship. Otherwise, I loved all the characters in it. The plot was great and was a terrific start to introducing skills and the talents many of the characters possessed, but also the connection and relationship between Halt and his young apprentice; an important concept that we needed to grasp throughout the novel to feel any sort of emotional attachment towards the duo. I HIGHLY reccommend this series! This series is definitly my top like 5 favorites! Extremely enjoyed it. Action pack readers will espetionaly love this series!
