A highly original book - in fact labour of love. Ian Smith is not only an accomplished author and researcher. He is also and experienced mountaineer and so he writes with a rare authority. While Whymper was not necessarily the most approachable of characters, the book brings him to life as an accomplished and talented man at the heart of nineteenth century life.
