Not quite what I expected. The book includes the experiences of Chris McCandless as well as can be put together, but it also includes experiences of the author as well as other adventurers and missing travelers. These stories are used to help understand and explain why Chris may have done things, as well as what probably happened to him. The author states that we will know what he thinks about Chris, and we do. Krakauer identifies very strongly with McCandless and uses this book to defend Chris ...more

I just couldn't stop thinking about this book. Krakauer's one of my favorite authors. If you're fascinated by Chris McCandless's idea of creating his own frontier in modern day America, you can see how it turns out much differently (i.e. the guy doesn't die) in Elizabeth Gilbert's (yes, the same one from Eat, Pray, Love, but she's not nearly so cooky in this one) The Last American Man.
