Jackson Mississippi 1960's. They are maids, not slaves...I guess you would call this a gray area. A beautifully written piece of work depicting the struggles between humans who can't seem to get past the color of ones skin or the status within the community they operate.

One of the best "current" books I've read in awhile. The characters were so richly created that I cried with very sub-character (boy mowing the lawn) was harmed. I cheered, I cringed, I enjoyed the ride.
