I initially gave this novel four stars but upon reflection I felt compelled to increase my rating. Mainly because I can't stop thinking about it.

Sometimes you read a novel and think, "That was really good." Then you move on to thoughts of what's for dinner. And then there are those novels you finish and immediately seek out other commentaries and opinions, not only because you're interested in what others thought, but because you just aren't ready to let go of the experience. I hadn't read this magnificent novel since my high school and college days. At that time, I found it to be quite dull. This time, however, I came to appreciate the magnificance of this classic work. Perhaps it is due to my having aged a bit, and no doubt my own understanding of the time period aided in my reading this time. For whatever reason, I very much enjoyed this story; its characters came alive for me and I was able to appreciate the end of the era it so aptly portrayed. ...more

I'm not a big fan of this book. I think it's a glorified soap-opera, I have difficulty seeing it in any other light. I'm sorry, I just can't get past how blown up the plot is.
