What Members Thought

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past." Now, that's one hell of a final line. What strikes me most about this novel is that not one word seems out of place. Every chapter, every event, every character has a purpose. I find it sort of strangely perfect - more so than "best novel of all-time" great. But 'The Great Gatsby' remains an enduring classic for a reason.

I marvel at the construction of this novel each time I read it. Not only is the writing fine, but also the way it's told through the eyes of an outsider, which adds to the enigma of who Gatsby is, as does the use of imagery and symbolism. This is American letters at its best.
