I just finished rereading Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence," and loved it even more than the first time. Wharton uses such beautiful language that is descriptive without taking it to the eyes glazing over level that some Victorian literature reaches. I liked this book, but not enough to recommend it. Some of the interchanges between husband and wife were spot on genius. As a commentary on the individual feeling straight-jacketed by societal expectations, the book is very good. There is some forbidden love romantic tension, and some noble renununciation of the Emily Dickinson kind: "itself choosing against itself, itself to justify unto itself". Also, a recognition of how one's fate can turn on a dime.
