I didn't really know what to expect with Watership Down - I've never watched the movie and have just heard through the years that it was about rabbits and it was pretty intense. My husband actually made a face when I told him what I was listening to and said "I was way too young when I watched that movie" and shuddered. So I was a little skeptical.

A good classic, a nice, clean family book. Some violence among the animals, but nature does tend to be violent. I thought it was funny that in the introduction by the author, Adams says he never intended for the book to be an allegory or metaphor in any way, but just a bedtime story for his kids. And now they teach it in schools--finding all the metaphors and allegorical meaning they can. But I suppose we read for what we get out of something, not necessarily what the author intended.

Surprisingly good book!
Rabbits with complex characters on a big adventure helped by a seagull with a nondescript Central European accent, decorated with a sound knowledge of natural history.
That may sound like a bizarre recipe, but it's good enough to charm and fascinate the child in you and yet entertain and satisfy the adult.
