Firstly, if you are considering reading this, do try and get an edition with a weighty set of footnotes/endnotes. There are lots of historical references and places in London and Paris that need quick reference to prevent the text from feeling even more dense than it is. A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie, whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror.

I really enjoyed this book. It took me quite a few pages to understand some people and relationships, plus the book was quite slow to get started. It surprised me in the end and I did not see that coming, maybe because I didn't understand all of the first part of the book. I am very glad that I stuck with it and can fully appreciate why this book has stood the test of time.

LOVE. Kind of slow moving at times, but that's Dickens. I love it when he surprises me.
