There's something very endearing--and enduring--about this story of a man named Charley who is in an experiment with a rat named Algernon. It sticks with you years later as one of the saddest and more memorable endings.

What a great story. The ups and downs of Charlie are so hard to read about because he is coming to terms with his childhood in his mid-thirties. It is also hard to read about Charlie's personality change once his intelligence rapidly increases (and upon his rapid intellectual decrease). I would like to read the short story, which was the predecessor to the book, to see if it would be suitable for 7th graders. The novel would be more suitable for high school students or mature middle school stude
