So this kid who's like 17, turns 18 in the middle of the story, but he learns about some guy who dies and if you find the easter egg you win his multi gabillion dollar fortune and the internet program that everyone uses. Cool concept, the way that it was set up and the overall bit of this story being a hunt for this guy's secret fortune egg that he hid with clues in his will video, I loved that.

I gave this book a 1 star though because of how cliché and boring it was. I gave this book a 1 star though because of how cliché and boring it was. These 5 kids (18ish) all find the first key and door, they're all around the same age, would have been like 12 when the guy died. Basically their whole post pubescent life was spent looking for the first key and they got it. Nice, the gabillion dollars is in the possible hands of children(ish). Then in comes bad guys, a huge corporation that is hacking and cheating to get the keys but don't manage to get anywhere until they do. Then it's them vs the bad guys, children.

They all managed to watch the entirety of the 80's shows, movies, video games, comics, music, etc etc etc repeatedly while also spending hours upon hours hanging out in this virtual reality land and going to school and all this other business. And to top it off, they all recall a big huge chunk of the information without aid.

That's my problem with this book. In 5 years they watched a decades worth of EVERYTHING and remember A LOT OF IT. Most people I know, including myself, hear a familiar song and think oh oh i know this, what was it, or they know the song name or who sang it, but these kids could rattle off the year it came out and who the record company was and every minute detail about it. From a few seconds of the song. Same with movies, video games, etc. They were all walking encyclopedia's of the 80s. Sure, they spent 5 years obsessing over it, but the amount of stuff they could remember about the relevant things to the keys and gates and clues was unrealistic and put me off of this book so hard.

Every now and then knowing the thing that was referenced would have been fine, but almost always knowing it, or knowing it enough to be sure about something and not need to look up much else? Ugh. The end gate where they all helped each other and it was a team effort, that was more realistic and also THEY BASICALLY DID WHAT THE BAD CORPORATION TEAM WAS DOING. He had people in his ear feeding him the right answers or help, sure his rig wasn't hacked so he was still doing all the controls, but they still kind of cheated in the end. Even if it was the teamwork gate, they would have all been in separate instances and not be able to help each other.

Just. Ugh. /rant ...more
