The book feels highly inspired by Piers Anthony's "On a Pale Horse". For me, there were some fundamental writing issues. The purpose of death is poorly defined with a plot hole being dodged around and repeatedly questioned by the protagonist, which starts to feel like Harmon not knowing how to fill that hole right now so let's not explain it.
