Notes:

Yay for libraries!

I have a few of this author's books on my radar to try out. I was happy to get the chance via library. Well, to my surprise, I do not like the narrator for the series. The made up accent for the main character grates on my ears like nails on a chalkboard. The fact that the other accents for characters are inconsistently enacted was another nail in the coffin.

If I could give negative stars for the narration, I would.

I'm going on a limb and leaving the rating at 3 stars.

The book is brilliant. I can't rave about it enough.

The audio book is the worst experience of my life. The voice put on for the MC is intolerable. Makes him sound like a thick, moronic, brain damaged moron with rocks in his mouth. If I hadn't got the ebook with the audible book, and a friend who raved about it, this would have been a minus 5 star review. Its also an insult, bar bouncers, ex squaddies, and the North of England as they don't sound like that. Not even in Newcastle. I suffered a few

Hero, but why?

The LitRPG part of this story is engaging - Jax finds himself in a new world and has to scramble to survive, no matter what. He’s got a good heart in a seemingly evil world. And he’s searching for his brother. There’s a nice series of escalating battles with just about the right amount of crunch.

One negative is the rather heavy foul language and the treatment of women (too much teenage boy fantasy for my taste).

I've been putting off reading this series for a while. It pegged itself as a dark fantasy LitRPG and those generally are just too far to the other side to be enjoyable for me.

Boy was I wrong. Really enjoyable story, especially through the audiobook.
