Mooi taalgebruik, maar als geheel las het voor mij toch wat te fragmentarisch.
The story of Oorlog en terpentijn might not be the best, the style is flowery, but the way Stefan Hertmans treats the memories of his grandfather is quite endearing.
He based himself of the memoirs of his grandfather, Urbain Martien, which he discovered a little after the latter has passed away. His grandfather wanted to be a painter (hence the turpentine parts), but came involved in World War I (hence the war parts, obviously). Al even terug uitgelezen. Het was even wennen, vooral qua mooischrijverij en intellectuele liflafjes, maar goed te pruimen. Indrukwekkend waren vooral de beschreven oorlog scènes die in al zijn intensiteit bij me binnenkwamen en waardoor ik, veel meer als bij wat voor oorlogsfilm ook, doordrongen raakte van de gruwelen die een oorlog in mensen kunnen losmaken.
