Intricately layered, beautifully woven, a fairy tale for those of us whose childhood was steeped in folklore and myths. Novik's grasp of the human spirit and their relationships makes a deep impression. I had thought that this was to be a re-telling of another fairy tale, but it is so much more and vaguely resembles the original. It stands out all on its own.

A century and a half old wizard chooses a village girl of sixteen every ten years. Every one of them comes away changed and chooses not to

The story was really interesting. But the ending where we finally find out what the Wood is and how it was created was pretty dumb. It didn't make much sense to me.

I also didn't understand the explanation for the Queen fooling them.

I also wanted more romance between Agnieska and Sarkan.

Oh my goodness, this is one of the best books I've read. It does have it's issues but overall, I'm very pleased and plan to read more of Naomi Novik's works. I have the first few of her Temeraire series so that's coming soon. I'm highly recommending this one.... ...more

Not sure what the hype about this book is all about. I was pretty bored through most of it, though it did pick up towards the end. I never connected with any of the characters and their "non-relationship". ...more

I liked a lot of things about this, but the parts when Anieska leaves tower for the capital drag.
I did like her though she's a mess, but ultimately a comfortable one.

Uprooted is a tale reminiscent of the classic fairy tales and has the same tangible magic and old world feel of Beauty by Robin McKinley. This book is beautiful, terrifying, and wonderful. When I finished the last page I flipped back to page one and started over again.
