My public service announcement of the day :) ...if you are on the fence about Written in Red and like urban fantasy (and don't need more than a whiff of the potential for a romance somewhere down the road) this was just as good as everyone else has been telling you. 5 stars from me (normally I have a hard time doing more than 4.5 which is 'I really liked it'.)

Written in Red, the first in The Others series is first rate dark Urban Fantasy. Anne Bishop has created a world where the supernatural creatures are dark, dangerous and definitely different from humans who they describe as "monkeys" and "meat". I loved this book!

I am not Anne Bishop's biggest fan (I DO like her writing!) but this was a very nice and happy surprise. The book is original and fresh with scary monsters aplenty.
The world setting was very well done and nicely written, even with the cutting and the pain/pleasure involved.

This first installment (I'm guessing this is a series?) has no big romance or cliffhanger (so refreshing) in the end, I can't wait for the next one!
So until then, this is a reread waiting to happen. ;D

A good, solid world. I expect as much from Anne Bishop. There are certainly parallels between this plot and her previous ones but I feel that her work has been polished and this story is even richer for it.
