Four and a half
I’ve enjoyed this authors work but held off reading this as I’d seen it compared to Beauty and the Beast and honestly I wasn’t in the mood for that type of story. However I could hold off no longer and I’m going to state categorically, loud and clear that any illusions of that famous fairytale quickly got blown to smithereens .
This couple are not attractive physically to each other but both are rational, forward thinking and compassionate so obviously not beastly at all . Ok I ...more

What a precious work Grace did! I certainly didn't hope that this book would be among my favorites, but sure it is one of my favorites. I find this story absolutely unique and stunning !!!
Well ... I couldn't comment on this book immediately after reading, because I needed to distract what the whole story brought to me. So many feelings!
I highly recomend this book to everyone who like to read some YA/Adult fantasy.

This was a great story but a bit short. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger or anything but it is only a portion of Brishen and Ildiko's story. That made the ending of this book a bit anticlimactic and offered us no future look into their lives or an ending for their story.
I enjoyed the writing and liked the main characters quite a bit. The love story that unfolded for our characters, who were forced into marriage, was sweet and riveting to watch. I look forward to reading book 2 and seeing what co ...more

I'm looking forward to the next book! The novel premise here is that the hero and heroine are instinctively repelled by each other, physically, since their peoples are so very different: they're literally night and day. Humans instinctively distrust the Kai, with their unreadable monochrome eyes, ashen grey skin, sharp claws, and jaws full of sharp teeth. The Kai think that human skin looks like pale flesh of shell-fish creatures, and human eyes with their whites, irises, and pupils roll around

Arranged marriage becomes pleasant companionship evolving into friendship which blossoms into love. A sweet tale of looking past appearances and prejudices, but after the relationship started to find its feet, I kept waiting for the bigger picture, the overall story arc. I was disappointed to finally discover it at the epilogue. The last two pages! So, I guess this first book of the series is simply the foundation to build the rest on. I just wish it involved more of the plot ea ...more

I'm not sure I was 100% with this book but I'm glad I finished it after all. It ended up a good story. This is a fantasy romance novel and as such not something I ordinarily read but Grace Draven is a fabulous writer and I'm definitely looking forward to other stories from her.

A stunning book that stayed with me long after I read the final page. Terrific writing. Incandescent story. Complex and deep characters, ones I fell in love with. I loved every word. Can't wait for the second book in the series.
