Great story with totally engaging characters.
But read it, don't listen to it.
(I don't even know if there's an audiobook, so it's not about that). If you're reading, it's easier to skim the info dumps. You might not want to because the story is that good, but at least you have the option. ...more

I have never read a McKinley book before, so I didn't know what I was getting into. The story was very intriguing, though the heroine tended to whine way too much about her gifts. However, my biggest complaint is the amount of internalizing drama and side descriptions and information that was going on. It's my own fault...I had...expectations...based on previous authors. The other thing that nagged me was the characters' history! I wanted to know more about the Blaise family, I wanted to know mo

I really enjoyed this novel. It was an unusual novel for me.
(Spoilers below)
In this novel, Robin McKinley leaves a lot to the reader's imagination. For example, what makes Con different from other vampires. I believe it is because he does not drink blood from humans to sustain his existence. Why did I come to this conclusion? Because Bo has him chained to a wall, starving. Yet, when Bo tries to entice him by delivering Rae to him, he still will not harm her. Also, at the end, when Rae leaves wit ...more

This is actually the third time I've read this book, and it keeps getting better every time! McKinley's version of vampires and the magical world awakening is well plotted and fleshed out which is the perfect backdrop for Rae, Sunshine, and her dry, sharp humor.
This is such a good book. Pick it up if you're in the mood for a dark, vampire tale full of humor and to see the main character realize that just because someone is a particular thing, it doesn't automatically make them evil. ...more

Great story idea...
I finished this book only to see how the two main characters evolved. I did not care for the rambling, tangential narration. It grated on my nerves to the point that getting through this became a chore. But points to McKinley for making the characters (secondary included) enticing enough for me to endure the narrative mire.

I love this book. I've re-read it repeatedly, and I love it more every time.
