4.5 stars. I'm really late to the Mercy Thompson party but I resisted starting this series since it pushes some of my hot buttons. I'm not a big fan of 1st person point-of-view. I don't like love triangles and I prefer romance to urban fantasy. However, I'm a huge fan of Patricia Briggs' Alpha & Omega series so I just couldn't resist learning more about my favorite characters like Bran, Samuel, Charles, and Anna as well as seeing the events mentioned in Cry Wolf and Hunting Ground from another p 4.5 stars. So, I caved and read it and am glad I did. As this book has been out for years, no need to re-hash the plot. I do now completely understand why readers love this series. Mercy is very, very likeable, as is Adam and Stefan and the rest of the supporting characters. I loved the information on the Aspen Creek pack, Samuel's painful history and his relationship with Mercy when she was a young girl, all of which were bits and pieces I was missing.

My only complaint really centers on the fact that there is really no romance to speak of in this book, just a set up of Adam as a love interest along with Mercy recognizing her un-resolved feelings for Samuel, who she had a crush on as a young teen. I also found (view spoiler) Still, a fun read and good set up for the rest of the series so off I go to read book 2, Blood Bound.

Great world building, engaging characters but the story resolution was just a bit convoluted for me.
