I look forward to reading this book 1000 more times. I will take all the L.M. Montgomery purple prose all day long, I eat it up!!!! Everything that should annoy me about this book is in fact perfect. The way the conflict between the couple could easily be resolved with one honest conversation? No honest conversations, only wild assumptions and drastic actions! The way Barney tells Valancy she's never to inquire into the details of his life? We love a man of mystery! The one thing that is very wr

This is possibly my favorite of L.M. Montgomery’s books, Anne included. It’s a tremendous Mary Jane story... Valancy Stirling is given terrible news which jolts her from the deep and muddy rut her life has run in – and everything changes. From poking I found a reference to the book as a “fairy tale”; I suppose, in a way, that’s so, with the references to Bluebeard’s castle and the transformations of Valancy and Barney Snaith. It has dark edges, this romantic tale, not least of which is Valancy’s

I already reviewed The Blue Castle (the paperback) edition, but ... it's one of my favorite books, and I read it fairly often. So here's another one.
The Blue Castle has been one of my favorite books since the first time I read it, more years ago than I care to dwell on. My childhood and youth was nothing like Valancy Sterling's – my family was pretty terrific – but my personality was (is) an awful lot like hers in some ways. So of course I always adored a book in which a girl a lot like me finds ...more

What a lovely, charming book! It was a quick 'read' - I started last night while knitting and finished listening while I was doing chores today.
I had only read Montgomery's Anne-with-an-E books, but always loved them. Now I'm going to have to dig into some of her other ones.
I didn't really like Valancy in the beginning - she was such a doormat. But it was lovely to watch her shed that early sheltered life and become her own person. And there were a few too many coincidences in the book, but I th ...more

Somehow, I missed this one, after reading a few of the other books, like "Along the Shore," which is a collection of short stories by LMM, and a few of the Emily and Rilla episodes, which I should re-read. Don't know how I missed this one; by the first half of the first chapter, I'm already enchanted.

Charming story of the mousy "old maid" dutiful daughter, who breaks free when she (gasp) receives news from her doctor that she has about a year to live. All sorts of wonderful things happen as she blooms, including a very sweet romance with the mysterious outsider who is reviled in all the town gossip. A real gem from the author of the Anne of Green Gables series.
