This is an essential read. The author has done the work. I mean, so much in-depth work that it’s nearly breathtaking. Poverty is a grind. If you haven’t lived it (I am fortunate, and haven’t) you will never know how difficult it is to pull yourself out of it. Desmond applies a wonderful narrative ability to take us there. To make us see and feel in a way that is why I freaking love books. They say stories can help build empathy, and this is why. This book is why. And his scholarly work backs it ...more
