This was, quite possilby, the weirdest book I've ever read. I think it was actually a religious sermon hidden in a fiction novel. Would I recommend it? Sure, why not, but I have no idea who I'd recommend it to. It was just that weird. ...more

Oh Neil Gaiman. It pains me to give you 3 stars. Really it does. However, the fact you are Neil Gaiman saved this book. Despite a sometimes dry plot and characters that should have been great but weren't...you somehow kept me reading for over 600 pages. It wasn't that I cared about Shadow (because i'm pretty sure I didn't)or that I had a deep appreciation for the gods (because half the time I couldn't remember who was who). I think I only got as far in this book as I did because I was bored. There was far too much swearing and sex references in this book for me. Even after I had read some of this book, I had to read reviews and book blurbs to find out what it was about. Granted, I wasn't that far into the book, but if I haven't quite figured out what a book it about by page 100, it probably wasn't written well enough, at least for my taste. This was a re-read....I originally read American Gods 3 years ago and liked it but didn't really give it a lot of time/thought. Much better on the reread. ...this is a book where knowing where it's going and it's basic worldview helps the reading rather than ruins the surprise. Putting it on Ken's reading list before the show comes out! ...more
