A re-read for my F2F bookclub as I don't remember much about the actual book/mystery. I only remember protagonist, Philip Marlowe, as I'm slowly following the series. As I was listening to this audiobook, I realised that I have a love/hate relationship with noir. I loved how the protagonist always pushed the boundaries (lots of grays there!) and I do love how the women just sound to glamorously gorgeous yet I hate that their personalities are always too wanting. I tried listening to the audio version of this book earlier this year and just couldn't stand Elliot Gould's narration. Reading it was so much better, especially if you hear Humphrey Bogart's voice in your head. The twisting plot is definitely difficult to follow, and I was relieved to read elsewhere the there really isn't an explanation for what happened to the chauffeur--apparently even Chandler didn't know.
