Saw this on one of those 'theme' tables at the library. Didn't even know this was the first in the Phillip Marlowe series. Really hadn't heard of Phillip Marlowe, except in relation to crossword clues.

If this is the book that stands as the genesis of detective noir, I think it lives up to that. Fun dialog all over the place. I really like stumbling across famous lines in their original context. Three and a half stars. ...more
