What Members Thought
I chose this book because I had heard over and over how well written it is. It is also LONG and it was available as a library digital download - perfect for vacation. I had mixed feelings about it.
On one hand, I really loved that so much of the book really has to do with research and the process of research. I know how great it is to sit in a quiet room and have a piece of history in your hands. It's a big reason I do what I do.
The research itself, on the other hand, wasn't always interesting. ...more

I reserve the right to change this to two starts; I am still undecided.
Great idea, some beautiful writing. But in need of some serious editing. And fewer contrivances. Reading it was a bit of a slog, honestly.
ETA: I had to knock it down to 2 stars. The ending, which obviates the whole book, enrages me.
