I will the first to make it clear that I wasn't really into Alice in Wonderland period. So when I first heard of this book I wasn't really jumping at it, but it really surprised me. When I heard of this book, I was very excited to read it because I enjoyed the source material and was excited to read a new take on it. I was generally meh on the book. I wasn't captivated by this portrayal of Wonderland, the plot felt a bit typical, and I didn't latch onto any of the main characters. I was pretty confused by Court and how she was very gungho about encouraging Alice's superhero life and then got angry when typical superhero unreliability and flakiness happened. I really want to tell you that I found this book amazing and that I immediately bought the next one in the series. An African-American Alice in an urban setting? An alternate explanation of how she came to Wonderland? Her being strong and brave and smart and vulnerable? What’s not to love?

Well ...

I read an entire book featuring this protagonist and I know nothing about her except a few facts: which family member died, how she got recruited, the names of her few friends, and her fighting skills.
