An absolute delight - meaty, interesting, fast-moving, and absorbing. Makes the history come to life and you don't want to put it down - housework be darned (as Stephen King defined a good book, once!) Re-read in memory of the great SKP.

Great reading - well researched and a great afterword detailing artistic liberties taken. Penman manages to bring Eleanor and Henry Plantagenet to life along with their motivations and their contemporaries. Henry was a brilliant king but made some mistakes in his personal life which cost him and his nation dearly and we get to watch as it all rolls out - great entertainment

Loved it and can't wait to read the next one!

I would have given the sixth star had the author's note been more detailed: you get so used to the accuracy of the book that you keep wondering if the episode you're reading has really taken place. I'm looking forward to reading the next book of the trilogy.
