Recommendation:If you're looking for a fantasy novel that's a little different, do this one!

I didn't know what to expect when I opened this one. I thought I'd be confused. I thought I'd hate it. It took about 50 pages to really get into it... but once I did, I enjoyed every minute of this book.

I didn't know what to expect when I opened this one. I thought I'd be confused. I thought I'd hate it. It took about 50 pages to really get into it... but once I did, I enjoyed every minute of this book.

“It is a common saying that women are delicate creatures, flowers, eggs, anything that may be crushed in a moment's carelessness. If I had ever believed it, I no longer did.”

Circe is disliked by her father, Helios, God of the sun, Her mother, Perse, an Oceanid nymph, her siblings, and basically everyone else. She is believed to have no power. Until she mistakenly changes a mortal into a God and a rude nymph into a hideous creature. It is discovered that Circe is a witch. Frightened of her power, Zeus and Helios banish her to an isolated island, where Circe enchants wildlife and hones her craft. readers will see how Circe's story intertwines with other mythological figures, such as the minotaur, Hermes, Athena, Daedalus, and Odysseus.

Circe is probably one of my new favourite heroine book characters! She seems small and simple, but she's actually a total bad ass! No lie.

When I first started the book, it took about 50 pages to figure out what was going on. Initially the plot and cast of characters seemed complicated. And sometimes that can turn someone away from a book for sure. But I stuck with it. I'm glad I did.

I've always been interested in mythology, which is why I wanted to take a chance with this book. Well... that and the fact that the Goodreads ratings were so good! Now I know why.

There was a colourful cast of characters... I know there are a lot of them and some names require some thought to remember because they aren't common names. But you get the hang of it after a while.

I'll also say that a lot happens in the book and it's an interesting dynamic. I actually looked it all up and the book IS a retelling of actual Greek mythology. So at first I wondering if Circe was a real mythology goddess, and she was, and then I wondering if the author had just somehow tied her story into others or if these things were actually part of the goddess' story, and they indeed are! You know in grade 9 or 10 in high school when sometimes you have to study Greek mythology? Maybe teachers should be getting students to read this book (and potentially the author's other popular title, The Song of Achilles) to really understand and put it into context.

I really want to see a book by the author about Pandora, Persephone, Aphrodite or even Heracles! ...more

Si les gusta la mitología griega, este es el libro adecuado para ustedes. Madeline Miller nos relata la historia de Circe, de quien sabemos bastantito, pero aún así, a través de la ficción nos lleno algunos huecos para complementar la historia. Todo lo que leí en esta novela es hasta cierto punto real (el minotauro, Odiseo, etc.), pero genuinamente disfrute el dialogo de los personajes, los pensamientos de Circe, porque encajaron muy bien con lo que sucede.
