I loved this book. It's a rich character driven book taking place during world war 2. It jumps around to various characters, each with a deep background story, and details their personal adventures while the world falls apart. The war is almost secondary. It's just a part of their life and they have to survive it. If you love books with non-linear plots that really flesh out the characters you will love this one. ...more

I did not read many war novels but this book kept me reading on. I think over all I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. When I first started this book and saw how long it was I was afraid I would not like it and put it down, but I got through it. Though I have to be honest, this book still did not make me like war novels anymore than I do. Maybe someday, something may change my mind but not yet.

Okay, this is a hard book to review... For the most part I enjoyed it, but I also found it very slow going. It was like a monotone all the way through with few up and downs, and then parts that should have been faster paced or more exciting or scary weren't. Perhaps it was the writing style; although I enjoyed the style of writing and the short chapters like snap shots of their
