Young adult is not my genre, especially as I am many, many years removed from that age group. However, I really enjoyed Broken Branch Falls. Gabe the goblin is the main character and I think everyone can identify with his awkwardness and desire for more. The author really nailed the school settings. A great story about accepting other people/races and not being stereotyped.

To describe Broken Branch Falls by Tara Tyler in one word: delightful.

To describe it in a lot of words...
Gabe the Goblin's life isn't really all that different from that of the average teen---grappling with the cliques at school, feeling like he doesn't quite belong where everyone expects him to be, and crushing on the unattainable girl. I adored the little touches added to the Broken Branch world, like Looky Links and MeStar, that make it like our world but with a silly twist.Tara balances Gabe

This was a fun read. Gabe was a quirky character and it was fun to get inside his head. When the story begins, he's just like any other awkward teenager (even though he's a goblin), but as the story progresses, it takes a different turn and Gabe and his friends go on a quest to save their town from being torn apart. I just loved the descriptions of all of the beasts Gabe lives with and the ones he encounters during his quest. The idea of the different species wanting to coexist sends a great mes ...more

Goblins and Ogres and Pixies, Oh my!
This is a fabulous MG adventure with wonderful world-building that immerses you right into the story. Gabe, the main character, or should I say the main goblin, gets himself into trouble after a prank gone terribly wrong. That mistake starts Gabe on a series of adventures with companions from many of the other beasts populating his world.
Gabe and his friends don't agree with the adults who dictate who they should befriend and what activities they should enjoy.

When Gabe, a goblin flugelhorn player, pranks the ogre football team and is caught, his punishment is to play on that team. That's unheard of in Broken Branch. Species don't mix, or do they? Then something the school officials don't expect happens. Gabe, the goblin, and the ogres start to hit it off. In fact, Gabe teaches them some plays that allow Ginko High to win their first game. As fraternization increases on campus, The Town Council decides it's time to put a halt to it. They will tear dow ...more

There's a motley crew of goblins, pixies, ogres, dragons, and werewolves at the school known as Gingko High in the town of Broken Branch Falls. Trouble is, these creatures aren't supposed to interact with each other. Why? The High Council says bad things will happen if they do. When Gabe, the goblin, is caught meeting with a cute ogre, things are turned upside down. This leads to a quest to find a very important book, which in the process, creates some strong, unlikely friendships.

Wondering what happens after all humans disappear? Fantastical creatures develop (elves, trolls, dragons...) and their world isn't that much different than our own...well, in many respects, anyway.

The high school goblin Gabe should be intelligent, a geek and stick to his own kind. That's what all creatures do - never mingle with other species, although they go to school and live with each other everyday. They have to stick to their stereotypes too - ogres play sports and are stupid, goblins are

Such a fun book not only for middle grade readers, but for adults as well! Tyler does a great job capturing the angst of those teenaged years and showing how young people can challenge society to be better. I love the fantastical world she's created and how she depicts the various beasts that populate it. I think my favorite species are the ogres. Or maybe it's the dragons? Possibly the goblins? The werewolves? Actually, it's too hard to decide - they're all so much fun to read about!
