I *thought* I knew this story, but I didn't really.
The story being told through Nick's eyes gives it a humanity I didn't expect to find. I thought it would be all glitz and glitter, but it was layered and sad. Gatsby's obsessional love for Daisy causing him to build a life where he could be accepted as her consort was heart-breaking. The only time Daisy seemed to be real was when Gatsby wanted her to deny ever having had feelings for Tom. That honesty was the only time I felt a positive emotion ...more

I know, I know, it is supposed to be a classic, and it may represent what some people might have actually been like back in the 1920s but listening to a story about a bunch of bored rich folks with no sense and no morals was like drowning in raw sewage. I'm glad I listened to it - reading it would have taken longer. I'm also glad I listened to it because now I know what the story is about.
